If you’re looking for fancy coffee or uptown décor, Robert’s Grill in El Reno, OK probably isn’t for you. But, if you want good food with a little bit of history thrown in for good measure, I’ve got just the place!

I happened to wander in to Robert’s on my last trip across Route 66. When I asked for slaw on my hamburger, I expected to be met with a confused stare like I usually get outside of North Carolina. Instead, not only was my hamburger served with slaw, but it was the best slaw I’ve ever had, and that’s saying a lot. Topped with homemade chili, and massive in size, it takes a knife and fork just to get it all down.

“It’s not like traditional slaw, that’s for sure,” says grill owner Edward Graham. “The hamburger ends up being a cross between our famous Coney dog and a chili burger. Once you have one, nothing else will ever be the same.”

A True Piece of Route 66 History

Robert’s Grill opened in 1926 and quickly became a favorite with locals and passers-by alike. The onion burger is a traditional option as is the Coney dog, but Robert’s also serves breakfast at its 14-seat counter. By the time Ed Graham started working there at the age of 12, it was already a historic icon. When he and his wife Robin bought it 23 years ago, he knew one thing. “I didn’t want to change anything,” he says. “It’s a piece of history and we get thousands of visitors to Route 66 from all over the world every year. This is what they come for.”
