Drive Route 66

When you book your Route 66 East Classic Car Hire you will start your cross-country drive in the City of the Angels - Los Angeles, California. Situated in sunny Southern California, L.A. is the second largest U.S. city and offers a large assortment of entertainment and sightseeing opportunities starting with the Santa Monica Pier, home of the famous “Route 66 End” sign and unofficial start/end of Route 66. At the pier you can grab some great seafood, enjoy a classic egg cream or phosphate, and ride the Ferris wheel. While in L.A. spend a couple days taking in the array of sites, celebrity attractions and world-class dining. Perhaps you’ll take the Hollywood Walk of Fame on the way to enjoy the culinary creations of chefs Thomas Keller, Michael Voltaggio, or Nobu Matsuhisa. Or you may catch a concert at the Whisky a Go Go and tour the Sunset Strip, visit Disney Land or take in a L.A. Dodgers or Angels baseball game.

Travel Like A Star

As you depart L.A., stop for chili and a latte at the historic Barney’s Beanery in West Hollywood and then enjoy the sundrenched drive through Southern California. A side trip to Los Vegas may be on the agenda but if you end up getting delayed in L.A., consider a night in the Wigwam Hotel in San Bernardino. Then relax, play some games and enjoy world-class dining on a side-trip to Las Vegas before heading to Arizona. But resist the temptation to take Interstate 93 South and instead take U.S. 95 South where the old Route 66 meanders through the rugged Black Mountain range and through the old goldmining town of Oatman, where wild burros roam main street and wild west gun fights are reenacted in front of the historic - and reportedly haunted - Oatman Hotel. Then you’ll travel through Kingman, Williams and Flagstaff by way of the Grand Canyon—one of the 7 natural wonders of the world! You’ll then roll into Gallup, NM, which was a 1940s and 50s hotspot for filming Hollywood Westerns. Stay at the Historic El Rancho Hotel—just like Ronald Reagan, Humphrey Bogart, John Wayne and Katharine Hepburn—among many others.

Get Your Motor Runnin’

The state of New Mexico and the cities of Albuquerque and Santa Fe - rich in Southwestern art and culture - are next on the journey east. Route 66 then takes you to your next stop in Tucumcari, New Mexico—a small city frozen in time and highlighted in the 1946 hit “(Get Your Kicks on) Route 66.” Spend the night in the newly renovated, totally retro 1940’s Blue Swallow Motel before heading to beautiful Elk City, OK, home of the National Route 66 Museum and an area replete with museums, state parks, wildlife refuges and historic sites. On the Arkansas River, at the foothills of the Ozark Mountains awaits Tulsa, Oklahoma—the state’s cultural and arts center.

Get Your Kicks on a Route 66 Road Trip

Next, a side-trip to Branson, Missouri may be on the agenda. Dubbed the “live entertainment capital of the world,” and just 60 miles south of Route 66, Branson offers something for everyone; wineries, live music venues, museums and a historic downtown, in a more family friendly, middle-America atmosphere than Las Vegas. Then it’s on to St. Louis where you can journey to the top of the Gateway Arch, the nation’s highest monument soaring 630 feet over St. Louis. Northeast of St. Louis is Springfield, IL, home and resting place of the sixteenth U.S. President, Abraham Lincoln. There you can grab a classic bite at the 1950s-styled Charlie Parker’s Diner, tour the Illinois State Capitol or visit the historic Abraham Lincoln home, office, library or tomb.

The Windy City - Chicago, Illinois

You’ll spend your final nights in the heart of the midwest - Chicago, Illinois. A world-class city and third largest in the U.S., Chicago offers a ton of shopping, museums, restaurants, theaters, sports and entertainment opportunities to choose from. The Chicago architecture is world-renowned, the capstone being the Willis Tower standing 1450 feet and 110 floors. Plan on spending a couple days in the Chicago Loop (map), the heart of Chicago’s downtown culture.

Whatever attractions and restaurants you choose along your GPS-guided, self-drive Route 66 Classic Car Hire— you’ll have a myriad of ways to enjoy every day and night and truly “Get your kicks on Route 66!”
